Has Modi’s government implemented a more decisive political agenda for the rise of India as an economic and international power?

Thesis Outline.

India has reached a phase of accelerated economic growth rate, becoming, according to the International Monetary Fund, the tenth world economy in nominal terms. For this reason, this thesis aims to underline the new role acquired by India in the globalised economic and political world, and in particular, the specific role that the Modi government is playing in this context. Therefore, the key objectives of this research are: a) To determine, if in the new globalised world, the changing patterns of National Identity in India are having also an impact on the improvement of its territorial infrastructures, on its political stability and on the improvement of its military capabilities; b) To determine to what extent the Indian local elites perceive their position in both Asia and in the new globalised world; c) To understand if the Modi government is facilitating the rise of India as a new economic and political power within the international context; d) To understand if Modi's administration represents a decisive break with the liberalisation policies of the past 20 years, or if its apparent new nationalist tone is only a mask for continuity; e) To understand to what extent Modi's ideological leanings is influencing India's foreign policy. In short, this thesis represents an exploration of Indian nationalism and its implications for the development of India and its growing role as a fundamental international power.

Research Activities.

This thesis analyses a series of case studies regarding, economic, political, religious, and cultural aspects of India’s life. It focuses, thus, on key factors such, India's political decision-making process, economy, military defence policy, diplomacy, strategic culture, and Indian National Identity. Those levels of determination have been treated as a constant, while particular regard have been given to relevant and recurring historical evidences, regarding Modi's foreign policy. Consequently, a particular attention has been given to the analysis of bureaucratic and organizational perspectives of current Indian government, as well as, to the identification of key elements determining political and economic transformations at interstate level. Themes related to the historical narrative have been addressed within the chronology of key events, as well as, the pattern of policymaking doctrines embraced by the Indian government starting from India's independence to date, considering instruments such, the development of India’s naval capabilities, theoretical analysis of its military doctrines and military alliances, strategic culture, and diplomatic relations and cooperation with other world superpowers (in particular with U.S.).
