Appendix A

Guidance on Formatting the Thesis

Note the thesis is the commentary and, where applicable, the published work, bound into a single volume.

  1.                 Presenting the Thesis PhD by Existing Published or Creative Works for Examination

The following requirements will be adhered to in the format of the submitted thesis:

a)Theses will normally be in A4 format and should be in a temporarily bound form, which is sufficiently secure to ensure that pages cannot be added or removed. The Postgraduate Research Degrees Sub-committee may give permission for a thesis to be submitted in another format where it is satisfied that the contents of the thesis can be better expressed in that format.

b)Copies of the thesis will be presented using Arial font with a pitch size 12 in the main body of the text and pitch size 10 for footnotes.  An identical copy of the thesis should be supplied in electronic Microsoft Word format or PDF and physically attached to each submitted copy of the thesis.   Where copies of papers are included within the thesis, these should be the original copies, as they appear in their published form. This, of course, means that the font size, line spacing, layout etc. will already have been determined by the publisher.

c)The thesis will be printed on the recto side of the page only; the paper will be white and within the range 70 g/m2 to 100 g/m2.

d)The margin at the left-hand binding edge of the page will not be less than 40mm; other margins will not be less than 15mm.

e)Double or oneandahalf spacing will be used in the typescript except for indented quotations or footnotes where single spacing may be used.

f)Pages will be numbered consecutively through the main text including photographs and/or diagrams included as whole pages.

g)The title page, below, will give the following information:

1 the full title of the thesis;

2 the full name of the author;

3 that the degree is awarded by the University of Sunderland;

that the thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of PhD by Existing Published or Creative Works

5 the month and year of submission of the copy to Graduate Research Support office.

h)Sufficient copies of the thesis should be provided to GRS, for each examiner and the Independent Chair.  GRS will inform the candidate of the number of copies required.
